What To Do In The Event of A Leaking Ceiling

Imagine this scenario:

You’ve known for some time now about that spot on the ceiling. It wasn’t there a few months ago, but has gradually grown to its current size. Unfortunately, today, the water seeped through and started dripping. It formed a small puddle on the floor, but not before dripping onto your kitchen appliance on the counter and flowing off the edge.  You come home after work to a wet mess that has potentially spoilt your toaster, and now you have to clean up and look for a solution. So what do you do?

Step #1: Stay Calm

Don’t panic. Move anything under the water leakage that can be moved, and be careful if they are electronic devices. Turn off the power source for such appliances before attempting to relocate them. For items that are immobile, cover them to prevent further moisture penetration and damage.

In the above scenario, the source of the water leak was already known. In the case where this leak seems sudden, take a step back and assess a possible source. Identifying the vulnerable area will help in the next step.

Step #2: Contain the Leakage

Pails and towels are most commonly part of the immediate rescue and clean up team. Position your pail under the dripping to collect the water, while you do your best to dry the surrounding area. Bear in mind the rate of the dripping, and empty the pail as necessary.

If the dripping is flowing down a wall, you may not be able to utilise the pail and may require more towels. Fold and place the towels at the base of the wall to prevent the water from spreading. This should also be accompanied by frequent checks to replace or squeeze dry the soaked towels.
